Portable Magnetic Crack Detectors - Application

Portable Magnetic Crack Detectors help identify cracks in ferromagnetic substances may they be raw materials or finished goods. Since it is non destructive testing, the sample is not at all damaged and can be further processed as desired by the customer.

By applying longitudinal or circular current on the sample, circular or longitudinal magnetic fields are created around the sample respectively. If a crack is present, magnetic field lines will no longer be closed and north and south poles will be created. Once sprayed with micron sized iron powder, due to the north and south poles, the tiny iron particles will be attracted to the crack. The crack will be visible under White light.

Portable Magnetic Crack Detectors are used mostly where the sample to be tested is heavy and cumbersome to transport or when job work needs to be tested such as welding etc. The Magnetic Crack Detector is transported to the sample that needs to be tested and which is difficult to move. Dry Method: Small iron particles powder is either applied by hand, thrown or sprayed using the squeeze bulb. After fully applying the powder, current is applied to the sample and testing is done

Selecting the Appropriate Model

Diameter of the Sample: The greater the diameter, the greater the output current required. The basic thumb rule is 500Amps per inch diameter.

Surface only or Subsurface crack detection: For surface only cracks, AC output Magnetic Crack Detector is needed which is satisfied with the A Magnetic Crack Detector series. For subsurface and surface cracks, AH Magnetic Crack Detector is recommended.

Optional Accessories

Double Prod Set: Two prods are mounted on a single handle which allows the operator to handle the Prod Set with one hand and simultaneously apply powder with the other. The trigger switch is located on the Prod Handle.

Contact Clamp Pair: An indispensable item for making quick contact at high density current with odd shaped pieces. Clamps are made of aluminium and are accurately machined for fast heat dissipation. Maximum opening is 5 cm.
