Night vision technology is classified in 'Generations'. First generation night vision has been around the longest, and is still very popular because it's the least expensive. Second generation devices cost two or three times what first generation devices will, but will far out-perform first generation. Third generation night vision features the most recent developments that are in full production, and will give you excellent distance, contrast, and resolution. Fourth generation is considerably more expensive because its not yet produced in large quantities. Fourth generation does features some appreciable improvements over third generation devices. Night vision monoculars & spotting scopes provide single-eye viewing through a single image tube, while night vision binoculars allow two-eye viewing. Binoculars are available in either a dual-tube.
