The opacity of plastic material in sheet or pipe form is defined as the amount of light passing through a test specimen taken from the material under test as a percentage of the total incident light. It is determined by measuring the amount of light falling on a photocell in path of light rays both with and without the test specimen being placed in the path of rays.

The “Authentic” opacity tester consists of a light source giving a constant luminous output from an electric lamp operating from a stabilized DC voltage source, a mini integrating photometer for collecting the light entering it through a small opening in its wall, and a photocell with amplifier for measuring the intensity of light entering the photometer.

The light source has a stabilized DC voltage supply, a low voltage tungsten filament lamp, and a optical collimator system having a set of lenses and a small circular opening. The light coming from this system passes through a circular opening in the integrating photometer. An adjustable width specimen holder is provided to hold a flat test specimen in front of the opening of the photometer.

An eye response corrected silicon photocell is used for measurement of light intensity. When a test specimen is inserted in the path of light rays a part of this light gets absorbed by it, thus effecting the photocell is fed to an amplifier, which gives a linear output. This output is read on a digital meter.

The apparatus is complete with a light proof cabinet for housing the light source and the photometer with the photocell. The DC voltage supply and the amplifier are also built in the same cabinet. The arrangement is such that external light can not enter the photometer either with or without the test specimen being held in the clamp.
