Millions just watched the ball drop in Times Square on New Year’s Eve. However, like most marvels we take for granted, a great deal of engineering went into the celebration.

“There’s a winch that is directly underneath the mast and cables go up all the way to the top of the mast through ‘headblocks,’ and then they come down and lift the ball,There’s a computer system that drives the whole thing.”
