Permeability Apparatus

The property of the soil which permits the flow of water through its interconnected interstices.

A knowledge of permeability is essential in a number of soil engineering problems such as settlement of buildings, yield of wells, seepage through and below the earth structures.
It is always considered to be more accurate to determine permeability by direct laboratory method using an apparatus called permeameter.
There are two type of permeameters namely constant head permeameter and falling head permeameter.
Constant head permeameter are used for coarse grained cohesion less soils.
For relatively less permeable soil falling head permeameters are used.
(undisturbed fire grained soils having less than 10^-2cm/sec coefficient of permeability).
 
The equipment consists of :-
 
Stand with three glass tubes of 6mm, 10mm 20mm dia approx.
 
Metallic mould 100mm dia x 127.3mm height, 1000ml volume.
 
Extension collar 100mm dia x 60mm height
 
Drainage base plate with a recess for porous stone and an outlet value.
 
Drainage cap with recess for porous stone fitted with inlet valve and air release valve.
 
 Dummy plate.
 
Porous stone for drainage base plate cap
 
Rubber connection tube 3mm with Pinch cock.
 
Air inlet and water filling tube at the top.
