 This method is widely used for soils of various particle sizes from fine grained to coarse grained soil.

A tray with a central hole is placed on the ground and a hole about 100mm dia & 150 mm deep is excavated and soil so removed is carefully collected and weighed and dried. The hole created in the ground is then backfilled with standard uniform sand poured from a calibrated container for determining the volume of the hole.

The equipment consists of :

 
(a) Sand pouring cylinder fitted with conical Funnel and shutter capacity 3 litre
 
(b) Cylindrical calibration container 100mm ID x 150mm height.
 
(c) Metal Tray size 30x30x4cm with 10cm central hole.
